The Global Positioning System (GPS) refers to the use of satellites in space to get reliable position information such as location and time from anywhere in the world. The system is maintained by the United States government, more specifically the Department of Defense. Its development was as a result of the need of having an efficient navigation system that was not as disadvantageous as previous ones which were either too slow or not accurate enough.

Its wide use today was, however, not seen as a motivation to funding the research into this great invention but rather military advancements, during the time when the US was in the Cold War. In the days of its earlier use, the US military downgraded the signal used by civilians with the high-grade signal only used by them, but this was abolished in the late nineties as a result of a presidential directive.

GPS technology is made up of three components; that is space, controller and the user. The user refers to all of us who use this technology on a daily basis through receivers. The space refers to the numerous satellites and associated technologies which help in the accurate navigation offered by this system. The controller is the US government who ensure that its usage is not done in a harmful way.

Though GPS was earlier designed for use by the military, it has also a wide range of applications for use among civilians, especially when coupled with the emergency and continued development of the mobile phone. In the area of security, the system has been of great help as stolen items can easily be tracked down as the precise location of the items are known at all times. Vehicles and mobile phones are some of the items that are fitted with GPS trackers so that they could be easily located when stolen or misplaced. Movies have also taken a poke at this technology whereby, a wealthy character in the movie has his or her child fitted with such a device to get location of the child quite simply if the child get kidnapped. This tracking ability has really helped the car rental industry as they could now monitor the movements of their clients. It is also fitted in cars to help one to get directions while driving. The military itself also widened its applications, as it can be used to fire missiles to precise targets, locate pilots whose aircraft have been grounded and make patrols quite easier to manage.
